Been a while sinceI took a selfish. Today’s edition: working hard or hardly working…
I’d say a mixture of both. Also the quickly disappearing marks of my San Francisco sunburn. Using aloe from a fresh plant works lie magic, but feels like alien mucus. I highly recommend it.

Also: dislike how the photo app flips self-turned photos. I’m not used to looking at my face the way others see it. Makes for weird photos.

Si and I walked all the way from Golden Gate Park back to The Mission for dinner with Sean after his second rehearsal. This view was beautiful - especially after walking uphill for 20 minutes.

The Bay to Breakers race went through the Golden Gate Park yesterday- thousands of people thronged in the Haight, decked out in bright costumes. It was a wild ruckus - an excuse to party for San Franciscans. Definitely a sight to see.

Sean brought us to Heinold’s First and Last Chance - the Jack London bar on the docks of Oakland. By far the most salt bar I have ever had the pleasure of drinking at. Built in 1880, it fits 3 tables and a bar that seats 6. It’s a glorified shack by the water with a floor the slopes violently down as you walk in, giving you the feeling that you’re exploring a burrow. The walks are covered with seafaring memorabilia - long since yellowed with age - and news clippings from the area. It felt like a magical place only found in stories.

China Town, SF - early Sunday morning. Spent a whirl-wind weekend in San Fran visiting Sean with Si, who had never been before. It was a very different experience than my first visit … In some eye opening ways- but we’ll get to that later

Homesick

Sitting on my couch I was suddenly hit with the memory scent of wet New England seaweed. The smell it has as it swirls in vernal pools between barnacle covered boulders, the water cold and briney. I had this flash of a tactile memory. The feel of the barnacles beneath my palms, their sharp edges cutting into my flesh as I brace myself, trying to lower myself onto the rocks below. Slippery under foot as the waves lap their blue-black surfaces - both smooth and pock-marked from so many years at the edge of the shore.

I would give anything to drive to Ned’s point. Eat ice cream looking out at the se? Lounging in the shade of the lighthouse. Clambering down on to the rocks to touch the ocean, those familiar Buzzard Bay waters.

I would be lying if I said that this was the furthest I have ever lived from the ocean… But it is the furthest I have lived from that ocean. The Pacific is a different beast. Here in Southern California, it doesn’t have the brine, it doesn’t have e same scent or color. And the beaches are ones you’d dream about in the northeast… But they don’t help when I miss the ocean back home. I want it to be cold and rough, even a little inhospitable. The ocean should never feel tamed.
